Walk
for Warmth
What is Walk for Warmth?
Walk for Warmth is a volunteer community effort to assist low-income families with their heat-related utility bills. A WALK is sponsored by Capital Area Community Services, Inc., (CACS), in the city of Lansing, Ingham, Clinton, Eaton, and Shiawassee Counties the fourth Saturday in February each year.
How are funds raised?
Most funds are raised by individuals who request pledge sheets from CACS and ask their friends to make small pledges if they finish the WALK. Pledge donations of $5 or $10 add up quickly. Other funds are provided by individual donors directly. Contributions can be made at any time by businesses or individuals making checks payable to "CACS WALK FOR WARMTH" and mail to your local Community Action Agency (Click on link for locations, addresses, and phone numbers). All funds raised through the WALK go directly to clients for utility assistance. Funds are used in the County in which they were raised.
How can YOU help?
By agreeing to experience what it feels like to be COLD for one hour this winter, you can help people in your community so they do not have to be cold in their own homes! Ask your friends, neighbors, and co-workers to walk with you or sponsor you in the next WALK! Offer to be the "Designated WALKER" for your company, church, organization, or neighborhood! Walk the 1 to 3 mile fixed route in the community you live nearest to...Lansing, Charlotte, St. Johns, Mason, or Owosso! Encourage others to join you! If WALKING is an impossibility, consider helping out by Making a one-time tax-deductible donation, or Pledging your support for a "Designated WALKER", or Making the WALK your company/organization's community project.
Are funds still needed?
YES! Although the WALKS have helped many who would not otherwise have had assistance, there is never enough money to help all those who need it!
How are funds applied for?
Applications are available at any of the CACS Service Centers or Senior Offices in the four county area and the city of Lansing. All utility assistance requires participation in an Energy Education workshop.
